🥊 Mini Brands vs Miniverse: which is better?

2026 is the year ZURU and MGA went after the same spot on your shelf with the same idea: mini vinyl records that actually play. My short answer: for the most records at the lowest price, get Mini Brands. If the Miniverse artist list makes you smile, or you like the idea of wearing a record on your backpack, get Miniverse.

Until now each brand stayed in its lane. Mini Brands made tiny grocery replicas (and lately Disney snow globes you build yourself), Miniverse made tiny resin food you cure under UV light. Then both launched mini record players with collectible records that play real music, and both hit Target on the same street date, June 1, 2026. Coincidence? Not a chance. This is a licensing war.

And the question in my DMs is always the same: which one do I get? Buying into both lines eats a month and a half of collecting budget. So let's do this properly. If you go ZURU, I keep the full checklist of the 45 Mini Brands Vinyl records (in Spanish).

👀 Heads up

They're not compatible. Buy the Mini Brands player and Miniverse records won't play on it. Same the other way around. Pick your side before you start collecting: ZURU ecosystem or MGA ecosystem.

💡 Fun fact

The APT. record by ROSÉ & Bruno Mars only comes with the Mini Brands player (the Playset). It's not in any capsule. If you want it, buy the player or pay reseller prices.

🎵 Songs: current hits vs legacy artists

This is the part that settles it. The fun of collecting mini records isn't the plastic, it's the music inside. And each brand bets on a different era.

What ZURU picked

Mini Brands Really Works Vinyl leans on recent hits: Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan and, per the community checklist, Benson Boone and Lola Young. Songs you hear on TikTok every other scroll. It isn't only the charts, though. The same community checklist lists classics in the mix too, like The Beach Boys, The Jackson 5, KISS, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Sting. If you follow what's big in music right now, this list will make your day.

What MGA picked

Miniverse Real Music goes the other way: legacy artists from the 60s to the 2010s. Britney Spears with …Baby One More Time (Toxic only comes in the Britney Spears Special Edition), Elton John, blink-182, The Beach Boys, Def Leppard, Public Enemy, Amy Winehouse, Imagine Dragons, Bob Marley and TLC. It's a more curated list. Fewer records, more emotional weight if you grew up with them. The full lineup is in my Miniverse Real Music guide (in Spanish).

"ZURU sells what's playing now. MGA sells what was playing when you burned your own CDs." Me, trying to explain it to my 12-year-old cousin

⚙️ How they work: RFID, batteries and the ecosystem trap

Straight up: the players don't work across brands. At all. No adapter, no trick. Both hide a small passive RFID tag in each record. The player reads it and plays the matching clip, which is stored inside the player, not on the record. Each player only recognizes its own brand, and Mini Brands records don't even fit the Miniverse turntable: pentagon-shaped hole vs. a round spindle.

So if you buy the Mini Brands player, Miniverse records are pretty pieces of plastic on it. Pretty and silent. Same the other way around.

📌 Checked September 29, 2026

No official cross-compatibility, and no sign either brand wants it. Some collectors have moved the RFID tag from one record to another as a DIY hack. That's a hobbyist trick, not something ZURU or MGA support. Expect it to stay this way for the life of the product.

How they sound

Neither one is a real analog record. You get a clip of about 30 seconds per song, with a bit of static at the start to sell the vinyl feel. The two little speakers on the Miniverse set are decorative, so the sound comes from the player itself. Quality is close on both. The real difference is the song list.

Rechargeable vs batteries

The Mini Brands player has a built-in battery you charge over USB-C. Charge it and go. The Miniverse player runs on replaceable batteries that come in the box, and there's only one version, with no USB charging. The battery type isn't settled yet: a hands-on review says 2 × AAA, Target's listing says 3 × LR44, so check the base before buying spares. For me rechargeable wins every time. Batteries are a pain, especially when a kid leaves it on all afternoon.

💰 Price and where to buy in the US and UK

US prices below are the list prices at Target and MGA Shop. Amazon moves around, so check the listing. UK prices are what I found at UK retailers on September 29, 2026.

Mini Brands Really Works Vinyl (ZURU)

  • Vinyl Playset Series 1 (the player): $19.99 / £19.99. Comes with the APT. record and a display stand. In stock at Target when I checked. See it on Amazon
  • Vinyl Capsule Series 1: $9.99 (Target's list price before the listing went down) / £7.99 for 4 records + 1 accessory. On Amazon.com it's sold as a 2-pack (8 records + 2 accessories).
  • Costco bundle: the Playset with three capsules. The Costco listing showed no price and “unavailable” when I checked.

MGA's Miniverse Real Music

  • Record Player: $21.99 / £19.99. Beethoven remix record, a furniture piece and 2 decorative speakers. At the MGA Shop and Target. See it on Amazon
  • Vinyl blind pack: $11.99 / about £9.99. 4 records + keychain + stackable mini crate. See it on Amazon
  • Record Shop: $29.99. 30+ pieces, including a licensed Fender guitar, plus 1 mini record. Sold out at MGA Shop on September 29, in stock on Amazon.
  • Britney Spears Special Edition: $14.99. A closed set (not blind) with the Toxic record, a keychain sleeve, a tote and a poster, and a few other extras. Available at MGA Shop and on Amazon.
  • Bratz Special Edition: $12.99 since September 3, 2026. The “Dollz Doll” record plus doll clothes, at MGA Shop.

Stores to watch

US: Target carries both players (the Mini Brands one was in stock at $19.99 when I checked). MGA Shop sells the whole Miniverse line. Amazon.com has everything linked above, sold by Amazon. Walmart has a Mini Brands Vinyl listing too. UK: Smyths lists both lines, JAC Stores has the Mini Brands player, and independent shops like Booghe and Toys4you carry Miniverse. On Amazon.co.uk one Mini Brands 2-pack listing was unavailable and another was in stock.

Mini Brands Vinyl recall? What happened at Target

In June 2026, collectors on r/MiniBrands, X and TikTok reported Target registers flagging the Mini Brands Vinyl capsules as “Do Not Sell”. As of September 29, 2026, the capsule listing on target.com returns a 404, while the player is still for sale at $19.99.

👀 Confirmed vs rumor

There's no official recall. No statement from ZURU or Target, and no ZURU, Mini Brands or Miniverse entry among the CPSC's 2026 recalls. Collectors point to Lola Young's “Messy” mini record: its back cover reportedly reprints the tracklist of her album This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway, where track 9 has an explicit title. That's the community's theory, not a confirmed reason. On Amazon.com the original single-capsule listing is gone and the 2-pack has taken its place. The whole story is in my Target article (in Spanish).

💭 My take: which one I'd actually buy

💭 What I think

I'll pick a side, because that's the only way this is useful: if I could only keep one, I'm keeping Miniverse Real Music.

Here's why. ZURU has more records, more current hits and better prices. On paper, ZURU wins. But MGA's keychains are chef's kiss. Clipping the Britney record to my backpack and taking it out with me feels like real collecting, not just shelf collecting. Being able to carry it changes your relationship with the thing.

That said, if you live on TikTok, ZURU is objectively the better buy for you. You get 44 records to chase in capsules (plus APT. with the player), Billie Eilish and Kendrick, and a shelf people will envy. In the US, with the capsules gone from Target's site, Amazon's 2-pack is the easy way to buy them right now. My pick is personal taste, from a collector who puts looks ahead of quantity. Your mileage may vary.

If you've got budget for both (I know you probably don't, or you wouldn't be reading this), grab one blind pack from the line you like less, just to own a piece of each. Then buy the player from the side you'll actually use.

❓ Quick questions

Can you play Mini Brands vinyls on the Miniverse record player?

No. Both brands hide a passive RFID tag in each record, and each player only recognizes its own brand's tags. Mini Brands records don't even fit the Miniverse turntable: they have a pentagon-shaped hole and MGA uses a round spindle. Pick one ecosystem before you start collecting.

Which has more records, Mini Brands or Miniverse?

Mini Brands Really Works Vinyl Series 1 has 45 records: 44 come in blind capsules and the 45th, APT. by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars, only comes with the player. Miniverse Real Music has 20+ songs in its blind packs, plus a Beethoven remix record that comes with the player. If you want the bigger chase, it's Mini Brands.

How much do they cost in the US and UK?

Mini Brands: $19.99 for the player and $9.99 for a capsule in the US, £19.99 and £7.99 in the UK. Miniverse: $21.99 for the player and $11.99 for a blind pack in the US; in the UK the player is £19.99 and packs run about £9.99. Both blind packs come with 4 records, so that's $2.50 vs $3.00 per record.

Which one sounds better?

They sound about the same. Neither is a real analog record: the RFID tag tells the player which clip to play from its own memory, and you get roughly 30 seconds per song on both, with a bit of vinyl-style static at the start. The difference is the song list, not the audio.

Is the Mini Brands or the Miniverse record player rechargeable?

The Mini Brands player is: it has a built-in battery you charge over USB-C. The Miniverse player runs on replaceable batteries that come in the box and it isn't rechargeable. The battery type isn't confirmed yet (a hands-on review says 2 x AAA, Target lists 3 x LR44).

Were Mini Brands Vinyl capsules recalled?

There's no official recall. There's no statement from ZURU or Target, and nothing among the CPSC's 2026 recalls. In June 2026 collectors reported Target registers blocking the capsules, and as of September 29, 2026 the capsule listing on target.com returns a 404 while the player is still on sale. Collectors blame the Lola Young “Messy” mini record, whose back cover reportedly lists an album track with an explicit title, but that reason isn't confirmed.

Which one should I get if I'm new to this?

If you're into current hits like Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish or Chappell Roan, go Mini Brands Really Works Vinyl. If Britney, Elton John or blink-182 is more your thing, go Miniverse Real Music. The music decides, not the player.
