What is ZURU 5 Surprise Dino Dig?
ZURU 5 Surprise Dino Dig is a blind capsule with three mini dinosaurs, two accessories and an ounce of Smart Sand to dig them out of. Series 1 has 30 to collect.
You'll know the format if you've ever opened a 5 Surprise ball: peel the sections, pour out the sand, find the figures. When I first wrote about it in June it was barely in stores anywhere. Now it's on Target shelves, on Amazon.com as a 3-pack tube, and US unboxings have been pointing people to Target since late August. Funny thing? ZURU still doesn't have a product page for it on its own site.
What is 5 Surprise Dino Dig? A blind capsule from ZURU's 5 Surprise family. Each ball has 3 mini dinosaurs, 2 accessories and 30 g of Smart Sand, and Series 1 has 30 to collect. About $4.99 at Target.
The ball itself says 5 Surprise DINOS. The tube, the 13-ball display and some balls say DINO DIG. Target calls it "5 Surprise Dinos Capsule S1" and Amazon "5 Surprise Dino Capsule Series 1". Same product, so search all of those names.
What's inside each 5 Surprise Dino Dig capsule
Three dinos, two accessories, sand and a collector guide. That's the promise on the pack, and the unboxings match it. The accessories in the official photos are things like a fossil rock and a tiny shovel, but which two you get is part of the surprise. Does the sand do anything? It's there for the dig: the dinos come buried in it, and you get to keep the sand.
Target's spec sheet still says Number of Figures: 1, and ToyWiz titles it "1 random dino". Target's own description and the packaging say 3 mini dinosaurs + 2 accessories. When the listing and the box disagree, I go with the box.
All 30 5 Surprise Dino Dig figures and the possible rares
Thirty to collect, and here's the catch: nobody has published names. The tube prints a visual checklist of 29 figures plus one hidden silhouette, and Amazon's gallery has a range photo with all 30. Counting from that photo, they appear to be 25 colored dinos and 5 fossil skeletons. The species below are my own visual identification, not ZURU's names, so read every line as "appears to be".
| Group | How many | What they appear to be |
|---|---|---|
| Fossil skeletons | 5 | T-rex in gold, T-rex in bone color, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and Spinosaurus |
| Meat-eaters | 9 | T-rexes (orange, purple), raptors (blue, orange and a blue one with a shackle), Carnotaurus, Spinosaurus, two Dilophosaurus-style crests |
| Horns, plates and clubs | 7 | Triceratops (blue, green), Styracosaurus, Stegosaurus with a shackle, two Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus |
| Long necks and duckbills | 5 | Two Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Saurolophus, a purple duckbill |
| Not dinosaurs, or not sure | 4 | Pteranodon, Dimetrodon, a sea reptile that appears to be a Mosasaurus, and a blue long neck that could be a sauropod or a plesiosaur |
| Official names | 0 | Not published by ZURU |
ZURU hasn't announced any rare, chase or odds. Two things stand out, though: the gold T-rex skeleton, the only metallic figure, and the hidden silhouette on the tube checklist. Either could be a special. Neither is confirmed, so don't pay extra for one on that basis.
Where do these molds come from? One US YouTuber says they're reissued Gumi Yum dinos, an older ZURU line. It's a single claim I haven't been able to confirm, so file it under maybe.
Is 5 Surprise Dino Dig Mini Brands?
No, even if ToyWiz and the Walmart marketplace listing say "Mini Brands Dino Dig". The pack shows ZURU, 5 Surprise and Dinos or Dino Dig, with no Mini Brands (in Spanish) logo anywhere. Why the mix-up? Mini Brands lives inside the same 5 Surprise ecosystem, so some sellers drop everything in one bucket. ZURU also has a lot of dino toys, so here's how to tell them apart:
| Product | Format | What it is | How to tell |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 Surprise Dinos / Dino Dig | Ball or 3-pack tube | 3 dinos + 2 accessories + 30 g Smart Sand, 30 to collect | This one |
| 5 Surprise Dino Strike | Capsule | Older line, Series 1 to 6 (2019-2023) | Different line |
| 5 Surprise Dino Mix & Match | Capsule | Parts to build and swap dinos (2025) | Different line |
| Smashers Junior Dino Dig | Egg | Dough and parts to build a dino | Not 5 Surprise |
5 Surprise Dino Dig price and where to buy in the US and UK
Cheap, which is half the appeal. Target has the single capsule, Amazon the 3-pack tube, and ToyWiz both the capsule and a 13-ball display. Here it is in one table, with the date I checked.
| Market | Store | Format | Price | Status (Oct 5, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | Target | 1 capsule | $4.99 | Available, 11k+ bought last month |
| US | Amazon.com | 3-pack tube | $14.41 | In stock, sold by Amazon |
| US | ToyWiz | 1 capsule | $7.49 | In stock |
| US | ToyWiz | 13-capsule display | $99.99 | In stock |
| US | Walmart.com | 1 capsule | $12.44 | Marketplace only, sold by ToyWiz |
| UK | Amazon.co.uk | 3-pack tube | £14.99 | In stock, sold by Amazon |
| UK | Smyths, Argos, The Entertainer | - | Not listed | No listing found |
The ToyWiz display works out to about $7.69 per capsule, more than Target's $4.99, and nothing guarantees that 13 balls complete the 30. The Walmart.com listing is a ToyWiz marketplace offer at $12.44, not Walmart stock. If there's a Target near you, that's the cheap way in.
5 Surprise Dino Dig codes, size and fine print
Target lists the capsule at 3.74 x 3.74 x 3.74 in and 0.26 lb, plastic, no batteries, ages 3+. If you're searching by barcode, these are the numbers that matter. Seen a "Dino Dig" with a different code? Then it's a different toy.
| Format | ZURU item | UPC | Store IDs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single capsule | 77810 / 77810GQ2 | 193052093271 | Target TCIN 94977199 · DPCI 087-26-5177 |
| 3-pack tube | 77874 | 193052102461 | Amazon ASIN B0G2N9M48R |
The capsule's European barcode is EAN 4894680056206. All of these codes pass their check digit, and the capsule UPC is printed on the back of the ball, so you can check it in the store before you buy.
My take
Three dinos and a handful of sand for five bucks is a good deal, and Target's 11k+ monthly buyers seem to agree. Dino capsules sell themselves, kids open them again and again, and the 5 Surprise ball always hooks. As a stocking stuffer it's hard to beat.
As a collector, though, it still feels half done. No official names, no rarity list, no product page from ZURU, and a gold skeleton everyone will hunt without knowing if it's actually rare. My advice: buy singles at Target for the fun, skip the $99.99 display unless you just want volume, and don't pay reseller prices for the gold T-rex until someone proves it's a chase. When ZURU publishes a checklist, I'll update this.
Quick questions
How many dinos are in a 5 Surprise Dino Dig capsule?
Three mini dinosaurs and two accessories per capsule, plus 30 g (1 oz) of Smart Sand and a collector guide. The 3-pack tube holds three capsules, so nine dinos. Target's spec sheet says 1 figure, but its own description and the packaging say 3.
How many 5 Surprise Dino Dig figures are there to collect? Is there a rare one?
30 to collect in Series 1. From the range photo, they appear to be 25 colored dinos and 5 fossil skeletons, one of them gold. ZURU hasn't announced any rare, chase or odds, so the gold skeleton and the hidden silhouette on the tube are only possible specials.
Is 5 Surprise Dino Dig Mini Brands?
No. ToyWiz and Walmart list it as Mini Brands, but the packaging only shows ZURU, 5 Surprise and Dinos or Dino Dig. It's also not Dino Strike or Dino Mix and Match, which are older 5 Surprise lines.
